Over the weekend I shaved off the beard that I'd been growing for the past month. Saturday was goatee day. Sunday was mustache + handlebars day, then plain old mustache day. This morning I finally shaved off the mustache.
Now my face feels naked.
The Willamette (River) Valley, which starts at Eugene and goes north to Portland, where the Willamette meets the Columbia, consists of:
(1) Eugene and Corvallis, and
(2) Farmer communities. (Old-school; non-hippy.)
Salem is right in the middle of this. Having the state capital there probably helped Kerry some, but for all intents and purposes that part of the state might as well be east of the Cascades.
For instance, Bush got 60% of the vote in Linn county. Linn County is directly south of Marion, and its western border is 10 miles from Corvallis.
But I see what you're saying, and I honestly don't know. I haven't seen much of Salem, but my impression is that it is a fairly small, conservative town despite the state government being there.
aaronetc, there are drop-off sites for ballots sprinkled around most towns, so that people don't have to buy a stamp for their ballot. (Yes, they have to buy a stamp to mail in their ballot.) My guess is that exit pollers were hanging out around the drop points, although maybe that doesn't result in accurate exit polls.
Heh. Well, back when Quebec was threatening to secede, I heard scenarios where the U.S. would have picked up the maritime provinces and Newfoundland (should we have wanted it). So, fair's fair.
Fun article. I wish stoking Red America's inferiority complex so they would expel us were a viable option; it'd be way fun.
Also I'd like to vote against Wyoming, and use as my basis this quote from Cannibal, The Musical, an early Trey Parker/Matt Stone effort:
Polly Pry: You made it to Wyoming, right?
Packer: Yeah, but I would've been better off just letting those people catch me and kill me.
Polly Pry: Why?
Packer: You ever been to Wyoming?
I'm with PatB and christina on Vermont. The town of Barre (near Montpelier, the capital) has a diner whose goal is to only serve food grown within 50 miles of Barre. Also Brattleboro is nice, and there are some good towns near Burlington. Middlebury is a small college town, but maybe a bit yuppified.
Not so keen on Oregon. You get clusters of large college towns like Eugene and Corvallis, but the smaller towns tend to be fairly conservative. It's like Idaho with hippies.
Also, San Luis Obispo (CA) looks pretty interesting.
I'm sorry but although I've heard a lot of my friends discuss moving out of the U.S., I believe that that is entirely a cop-out. I lived in England for a year, and I came back because I understand the U.S., even if I apparently disagree with a majority of its voters. It is where I want to be; it is my home. And I am going to do what little I can to make my home a better place, depressing as that task seems right now.
Leaving it will not change things. In a sense, that's how we got to where we are today. With the metropolitan/coastal states attracting this country's best and brightest, we have a conservative, ill-educated core made up mainly of the people who couldn't, or didn't care to, leave to pursue their dreams in the city. That's where all the red on the map comes from. If you fellow liberal voters leave, then maybe Pennsylvania will go red in '08. Maybe New Jersey will become a lighter shade of blue, or even a battleground state.
Leaving is not the answer, good as it sounds right now. Do you realize how little the Canadian government influences us? Well, if you live there you will, and you will know why Canadians have such a love/hate relationship with us.
Of course, maybe you will have a great life in Canada/New Zealand/Ireland/etc., and if you really believe that, you should try it. But you should want to move to the country, not from America. And I can't see it being less frustrating than voting Democratic in a blue state.
Warrior: I agree with you, but Columbus is actually a nice town that tends to vote blue, given that OSU is there. I have an aunt and uncle there, and I'm certain they voted for Kerry.
If you want a scary red town in Ohio, think Cincinnati.
Says the Votemaster at electoral-vote.com:
All the servers appear to be under attack now, also DNS. I added another large multiprocessor but it doesn't seem to help much. I don't this is going to work. Sorry.
WTF???
Talking Points Memo was down for about 3 hours. Now Mr. Marshall sez:
As you might expect, we've been getting pretty consistent exit poll data all day. But until only a little bit ago we were dealing with our site problems. So I'm going to take a few minutes to pull all the poll data information together and evaluate it. Many of the numbers are available on other sites of course. But not all of them are reliable. At least some are at variance with the numbers I have, which I believe to be accurate. The short version is that Kerry is doing well in the second-tier states and leads, but only by very thin margins, in Ohio and Florida.
*distributes grains of salt*
By the way, it's nice to see the rest of the front page uncluttered by election posts, unlike that place with the blue pages.
Voted last night, left my ballot in a drop box. Voting in Oregon is as easy as you make it, since you get a ballot 2-3 weeks in advance. About to go see a movie, then commence drinking.
This is much easier than watching the Red Sox in the playoffs, but I learned lessons from that, namely, it's much easier to start watching the game in the 8th inning. Much easier to stay oblivious until the outcome is about to be decided. Then break out the strong drink.
Thanks for the post, Aceyim. I was looking forward (in some sense) to hearing about the other 4 minutes of OBL's tape.
This is actually consistent with what Anonymous, the senior CIA officer, says in "Imperial Hubris" about OBL's strategy. It is not to inflict terror, but actually to drive the U.S. into bankruptcy. I was reminded of that book when reading about the tape, in particular,
One official said that the government is waiting for the intelligence community to further analyze the tape, and that among things analysts will be looking for are any hidden messages that might be contained in the tape.(link)
As Anonymous said, there is no hidden message! Bin Laden is saying everything straight up. We're doing things he, and many Muslims, don't like. We need to stop. If we don't, we will be attacked again.
Bernockle: Agreed.
If pasting in Firefly quotes is what it takes to get you folks to watch it, I can do this all night.
Inara: "Right. You're a criminal mastermind. What was the last cargo we snuck past the Alliance to transport?"
Mal: "We made a perfectly good piece-"
Inara: "What was the cargo?"
Mal: "They were dolls."
Inara: "They were little geisha dolls with big heads that wobbled!"
Wow, this guy has a dark sense of humor. Compare the before and after versions of his thumbnail bio for potential undergrad advisees.
